Moje prvo lunarno novo leto- kako sem spoznala njegove korejske starše

For English press here.

Celo pot na vlaku sem se učila in ponavljala nekaj korejskih besed in stavkov.

Zelo so me očarali tudi njihova domačija, konfucijanska akademija in očetov kaligrafski studio.

My first lunar new year- how I met my Korean parents in law

Last year I went to Korea as a package; as a girlfriend, future wife and a pregnant future daughter in law. I know I skipped many steps so I was really nervous when I met his parents. What is more, I was a foreigner and I didn’t speak a word Korean. A complete texture of everything what most Korean parents in law dislike. Well, to be honest-this is what most parents don’t support in any kind of society.

Slovensko verzijo berite tukaj.

Whole way on the train I was keep on repeating few Korean sentences. It was a three hour ride to their hometown, so my brain had enough time to remember few words and phrases. Most of them were related to new year wishes and first meetings. Before we were on our way to Gyeongju, his Korean friends also taught me how to bow and I worried about this skill much.

The meeting was planned during lunar new year and so I had a chance to meet also other relatives from his side.

I am still thankful to my boyfriend’s translation as I am sure he used some of his diplomatic skills that everything went much better than I expected. I was ready that his parents  kick me out or even ignore me. When we entered their home, we bowed to them in Korean way. Luckily I was fit enough and still in the first months of pregnancy, so I didn’t roll over.
After the bow, his mom invited us for dinner she prepared at home. She even put on the table some bread and yogurt, as she worried I might have difficulties with Korean food. I felt this really warm-hearted gesture and I wanted to hug her immediately. I knew this would not be a good starter so we kept it for later moment.

In the following days, his parents introduced me Gyeongju, which is famous for the history. But what I liked the most were the hills surrounding the city, their traditional family house, their Confucian academy and his father’s calligraphy studio. I cannot wait to be back this year for our wedding.
